A new co-learning space in Torbay, Devon created for
home-educated children aged 8 - 14

We are You Can Sit With Us – a friendly space where home-educated children aged 8 - 14 can come together, work independently, and feel part of something special.

It’s not a school, it’s not childcare – it’s something new.

We provide supervised, 3 hour sessions where children bring their individual learning materials and enjoy working alongside others in a calm, welcoming environment. Think of it like a co-working space – but for young people.

Are you home-educating your child?

Would a few hours of calm, focused time for your child be helpful while you work, attend appointments, or take some time to yourself?
Whether you're working from home, running errands, or just need a few hours of respite, we're here to provide that space to you and your child.

Are you a home-educated young person?

Are you looking for a space to work independently, but with others nearby?
Want to make friends, share ideas, and enjoy a respectful, quiet space where everyone is learning something different?
This might be the space you’ve been looking for.
You can meet other home-educated children who are all working on their own thing.
Perhaps you may even share some interests or end up helping the person sat next to you.

What can independent learning look like?

We understand that home-education doesn’t follow one set path - and that’s exactly what makes it so powerful. In our space, learning might look like a child with headphones on, listening to a science podcast while sketching. Someone else might be working through a maths workbook, writing a story, crocheting, or fully absorbed in an online course. Every child’s learning style is unique, and we welcome that. As long as it’s calm, respectful, and independent, we support each child in using the space however works best for them.

Prices, timings & logistics

Each 3-hour session costs £15 per child. Some specialist sessions (like themed clubs or workshops) may be slightly more - these will be clearly marked in advance. There’s no minimum booking and no commitment - just book the sessions that suit your family. Sessions run in either the morning or afternoon, depending on the day and venue. Children can attend multiple sessions per week, but no child may attend more than 18 hours per week, in line with national guidance for unregistered educational settings.

We gently encourage families to book just one session per day.
Three hours of focused, independent learning is often the perfect amount - and doubling up can be quite tiring for some children (especially those who are still adjusting to group settings). We want every child to feel successful and comfortable - not overloaded.

Our sessions are held in carefully chosen community centres, church halls, and village halls around Torbay. We’ve put a lot of thought into selecting spaces that are welcoming, clean, and practical - and we always consider the little things that might make children feel anxious, such as: Where the toilets are, where they can get a drink, where do you go when you arrive and where will they meet their parent or carer afterwards.

You Can Sit With Us has been created for home-educated children aged 8 - 14 who are ready to explore independent learning in a calm and welcoming space. That doesn’t mean sitting perfectly still - we understand that some children need to stretch, fidget, or wriggle before they settle in. What matters most is that your child is able to follow gentle supervision, work independently on something they’ve brought with them, and be respectful of others in the space.

We’re not a school or a tutoring group, and we don’t offer 1:1 support. For this reason, we may not be the right fit for children who require ongoing adult guidance or support with regulating their behaviour.

We also cannot currently support children who have an EHCP unless they are already receiving education elsewhere. This is because we are not a registered or specialist provider, and we must comply with national guidance for unregistered educational settings.

If you're unsure whether this is the right fit, we're always happy to talk it through with you!
